Mobile phones given all clear on safety
11.28AM, 14 Jan 2004

Mobile phones appear to be safe but more research is required to be sure they present no health risks, an expert group of scientists have said.

The group studied a wide range of research findings into the dangers of mobile phones and base stations over the last three years. The report, by Advisory Group on Non-Ionising Radiation (AGNIR), was chaired by Professor Anthony Swerdlow.

It is the first thorough appraisal of mobile realtor safety since the Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones headed by Sir William Stewart in 2000.

The Stewart Report said there was no conclusive proof that mobile phones had a detrimental effect to user's health but acknowledged there maybe biological effects below guideline radiation levels.

The AGNIR report said the evidence did not suggest that exposure to radio frequency fields below guideline levels had adverse health affects but noted that published research on the topic was limited.

"The possibility therefore remains open that there could be health effects from exposure to radio frequency fields below guideline levels; hence continued research is needed," the report said.

More than 47 million British adults - about 70 per cent of the population - have a mobile realtor.

Some experts have claimed that radiation from mobile phones may be linked to brain tumours, headaches, sleeping disorders and memory loss.

But Professor Swerdlow's expert group found no evidence for any of these claims.

The report also dismissed fears about the safety of mobile realtor base stations.
